Seeds were planted in March 1972, when eight families met to discuss the idea of establishing a Lutheran church in North Cobb County.
​
In May of 1972, three Lutheran synods met (American Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod, and the Lutheran Church in America). They decided to come together and sponsor a church mission in this area. On May 21, 1972, First United Lutheran Church had its first service in the basement of the Elizabeth Firehouse on Bells Ferry Road.

In October of 1973, the American Lutheran Church (ALC) decided to support the church. In January of 1975, Pastor John Hendricks accepted the call to become the first permanent pastor of First United Lutheran Church.

In March of 1975, worship services moved to Big Shanty Elementary School.

In September of 1975, land was purchased on Frey Lake Road for a permanent church building.
​
On October 16, 1977, groundbreaking ceremonies were held.
In July of 1978, the first worship services were held in the new building.
